    Innovations in Sleep Technology

9:00 am-10:00 am – Cutting Edge Sleep App and Sleep Tracking Technology (Panel) The Future of Natural Sleep Aids and Supplements

For many people, getting to the bottom of one’s sleep habits can be confusing and incredibly complicated. From tossing and turning to difficulties falling asleep, there are numerous reasons that can cause a bad night’s sleep. Thankfully, with the advancement of sleep tracking technologies, consumers now have the ability to track different phases of their sleep, from REM to light sleep. In this panel we will discuss the most cutting-edge sleep tracking apps on the market today that not only offer advanced tracking but also in-app music suites to help you fall into a deep sleep.

11:15 am- 12:00 pm – Medical Advances in Sleep Apnea Research

The American Sleep Apnea Association estimates that 22 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea. They note that 80% of those are undiagnosed cases of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea increases risks of complications like high blood pressure, chronic heart failure, atrial fibrillation, stroke, other cardiovascular problems, and higher risk for type 2 diabetes, depression, and accidents involving vehicles or heavy machinery. A 2020 study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) notes that excessive sleepiness effects 15% to 50% of people with obstructive sleep apnea, and those who have the condition have a two to three-fold increased risk of cardiovascular and metabolic disease. This means it is even more important to diagnose people with the condition and manage it effectively. Further 2020 findings in The Journal of Clinical Sleep remark on the increased risks of COVID-19 cardiovascular complications in patients with obstructive sleep apnea, and new findings in International Journal of Obesity also suggest that sleep-disordered breathing and obstructive sleep apnea may increase risks of cancer. It is clear that medical advances in sleep apnea research are still underway and continue to bring us more information about the condition, its risks, and the importance of managing symptoms.

    1:15 pm – 2:00 pm – Pediatrics: It’s Sleepytime!

Pediatrics and sleep are an important topic. The study “Recommended Amount of Sleep for Pediatric Populations: A Consensus Statement of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine” explains that children who regularly get the recommended amount of sleep is associated with better health outcomes like improved attention, behavior, learning, memory, emotional regulation, quality of life, and mental and physical health. Every parent wants their child to meet those outcomes, and hopes to avoid risks of insufficient sleep like attention, behavior, and learning problems. Including naps, it is recommended that infants sleep 12 to 16 hours, 1- to 2-year-olds sleep 11 to 14 hours, 3- to 5-year-olds sleep 10 to 13 hours, and children ages 6 to 12 get 9 to 12 hours. However, many parents are still wondering how they can ensure their child gets the recommended amount of sleep and what pediatric sleep disorder risks they should be alert to.

Conservative estimates show that between 10 and 30 percent of adults suffer from chronic insomnia, according to the Sleep Foundation. As we all know, getting a solid night’s rest on a regular basis is incredibly important to both physical and mental health. But what can be done about it? In this panel we will discuss various types of insomnia, its causes and other topics related to the condition.
